Our Mission & Beliefs
At Twin City Bible Church, our desire is to be a thriving and influencing church. TCBC is a non-denominational Christian church. We are located at the corner of Lincoln and Michigan Avenues in Urbana, on the southeast edge of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign campus.
TCBC was founded by a group of people with a vision of reaching the University of Illinois campus with the message of Jesus Christ through a church that brought students and community people together. That was over 80 years ago, and today we’re just as excited about this vision. TCBC is committed to bringing community and campus together to make a difference for God’s Kingdom throughout the world.
Our Mission & Vision
The Mission of God
Fundamentally, “our” mission isn’t ours, it’s God’s. We believe he is a missionary God, on a mission to reconcile and redeem his fallen but beloved creation, and to raise it to the glory he intended. We believe God won the victory for that mission in the life, death, resurrection and ascension of Jesus. And we believe that Jesus is working out that victory through his people, the church, in the power of his Holy Spirit, until he returns.
Therefore, we believe that all churches and followers of Christ share some common elements of mission. We are called to:
- glorify God in our personal and corporate worship, encompassing all of life;
- gather with fellow believers in a community that embraces and extends God’s love;
- grow in our knowledge of God, his Word, and his ways, so that we increasingly think, feel, and act as Jesus does;
- give ourselves in loving service to others, according to the gifts and resources God gives us;
- go to all the world, proclaiming and enacting the gospel of God’s kingdom.
God shapes and situates each local church to play a unique role in that larger mission. Since its birth in 1933, Twin City Bible Church has had a strong sense of our role in God’s plan. We believe that we exist to see: Campus and community transformed by Christ to renew the world. Our mission is to bring together college students with people of all ages from the Champaign-Urbana community to experience the fullness of life in Christ. And not simply to experience it, but to be changed by it━to be conformed together to the image of Christ, speaking and acting as his ambassadors to our world. We do this because God’s mission to redeem all of creation means this creation matters, starting with the lives of individual women and men, boys and girls, from every nation.
This is an exciting mission! We count it a joy to be the church home of any student and any Champaign-Urbana community member who shares our heart for this campus.
Our Beliefs & Values
These are the ministry DNA of our church, the unique characteristics that differentiate us from other churches and shape how we pursue our mission. They run through all of our ministries and focus our ministry decisions. (Note: These are not the same as our Statement of Doctrine & Faith, which summarizes “what we believe.”) Because of God’s work in our church and the vision he’s placed in our heart, we value:
Biblical Teaching & Preaching
We take the “Bible” in our name seriously because we believe God’s key means of revelation is his Word. We grow and help others grow as Christ’s disciples as we seek God together through his Word and help one another live out his Word.
Campus & Community Together in Life and Ministry
Because of our university town setting, we have the unique opportunity to bring college and graduate students together with community people in one family in Christ. Rather than simply having a ministry to students, we desire to bring the generations together in all aspects of life. We believe God will use TCBC for widespread impact as community people and students experience life and ministry with one another.
Equipping & Sending
Because we minister in a transient community, God gives us the opportunity to serve the global church as an equipping and sending station. We want to invest in the development of people who are part of TCBC even for a short time and send them on to what God has next for them. We also desire to equip every person to live daily as “sent ones” — effective ambassadors for Christ in our spheres of influence.
We want every person to have an opportunity to develop genuine relationships with others at TCBC, to know and be known by others in a deep, transformative way. In a diverse university town, we relish the birth of relationships across gender, ethnic, age, and educational lines. Our desire is to be a church where we truly love one another and practice the “one anothers” of Scripture.
Clarity on the Essentials in a Culture of Grace
God brings people to TCBC from a wide variety of backgrounds.We want to pursue Christ-centered unity through an approach that “majors on the majors” while cultivating a culture of grace in areas where godly people have differing perspectives. We desire to listen to and learn from one another.
Statement of Faith
The following is TCBC’s Statement of Doctrine and Faith, a concise summary of what we believe to be key tenets of orthodox Christian faith. As such, we believe these can be affirmed by followers of Jesus of many denominational backgrounds.
We believe that the Bible is the only divinely inspired Word of God, that it is entirely trustworthy, and that it was given in its entirety as the Holy Spirit guided the sacred writers so that the words they wrote constitute the Word of God. It is, therefore, the final authoritative guide for faith and practice. (Psalm 119; Matthew 7:24; 2 Timothy 3:14-17; 2 Peter 1:20-21.)
We believe that the Godhead eternally exists in three persons—the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit—and that these three are one God, with the same nature, attributes, and perfection; and worthy of the same homage, confidence, and obedience. (Matthew 28:19-20; Luke 3:22; Ephesians 3:14-19; John 14:6-17; 2 Corinthians 13:14; Colossians 1:13-20; Hebrews 1:1-3.)
We believe that God the Son was and is Jesus Christ, was sent by God the Father, was virgin-born and sinless, was crucified as the atoning sacrifice for the sins of all people of all ages, died on the cross, was buried, and arose from the dead, and shall come again to this earth, according to the Holy Scriptures. (Matthew 1:8-25; Acts 3:13-26; Revelation 22:12-21.)
We believe that all people are sinners in need of the Savior, Jesus Christ, and that they can experience salvation only through personal faith in Him. (Psalm 14; John 3:3-8; Isaiah 64:6-7; Romans 10:9-17.)
The Holy Spirit
We believe that God the Holy Spirit regenerates people in new spiritual birth as they trust Christ as Savior and Lord, and by His abiding presence and power equips them for spiritual life and service. (Joel 2:28-29; Mark 1:4-8; John 3:3-8; 1 Corinthians 12:1-27.)
Heaven & Hell
We believe in the existence of heaven as the eternal destiny of believers, and hell as the eternal destiny of unbelievers, as taught in the Holy Scriptures. (Matthew 10:26-33.)
